Two species belonging to the Lonicera or honeysuckle genus are native in Estonia, the fly honeysuckle and the blue honeysuckle or honeyberry. As ornamental shrubs for instance the fragrant honeysuckle (Lonicera caprifolium; also called  Italian or Goat-leaf honeysuckle) and the Tatarian or bush honeysuckle (Lonicera tatarica), are grown, and sometimes also have gone wild.

The fly honeysuckle grows everywhere in Estonia in broadleaf forests and on forest and meadow margins.

The blue honeysuckle or honeyberry grows in western and central Estonia but is not present on the islands.
The board of editors of magazine Eesti Loodus toimetus has elected a “Tree of the Year“ since 1996.
