Wintering mallards
This year we celebrate a great jubilee – 50 years of wintering aquatic bird census. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive monitoring programmes in the world, where more than 100 countries participate. The first international mid-winter waterbird survey (International Waterbird Census) took place in 1967 and Estonia ws among the initiating countries.
The jubilee census takes place in January 2016, the core dates will be January 16th-17th , But all other counts made in January will be taken in account too. Please note in your census summary the bird species, the number of birds, the the gender and, in case of swans, also the age and the size of the family. Be sure to note the observation time and place as precisely as possible (water body, village, municipality, if possible also the geographical coordinates), the optical equipment used and any remarks about ice conditions and weather.
Please use if possible the observation forms which will make entering the data later much easier.
The map of the observation sectors, the observation form, reports and the Wetlands International circulars are available from the Internet at: http://www.eoy.ee/node/109
Please send the census summaries on February 15th, 2016 at the latest to:
EOÜ, Veski 4, Tartu 51005 (wintering water birds) or leho.luigujoe@emu.ee. Those who use the E-biodiversity database can enter their observations directly there.
A Happy New Year and a Successful January Census!
