Passerines on roads – Look out!

Passerines on road
In the last few days passerine flocks have been seen on the roads – bullfinches, sparrows. Car drivers, please be careful! In the cold the birds are clumsy and don’t react to dangers with the speed that we are used to. When you notice such a bird flock it is helpful to the pressure on the accelerator for a moment.
In frosty weather the temperature of bare asphalt, if there is even a little sun, is some few degrees less cold than the snow surface, particularly if there is a little wind shelter too. The birds have nothing edible to look for on the roads, just a little relief from the biting frost.
In such weather bird life is not all “milk and honey”. Although a little less cold was forecast for this week life is made worse by the wind and its accompanying wind chill and blowing snow.
