On January 13^th this elk bull still had antlers

 

On January 15^th only half of its pride was left: one of the shovel-type antlers had been dropped on the forest floor. On January 19^th the elk was "bare-headed“

 

 

Usually elks start dropping their antlers in November, the older ones first as a rule, and by December they are generally bare-headed. The stick antlers of young animals remain on the head longer but we will not discuss those now.

 

Elks that wear their antlers for longer periods always occur. The trail cameras of today provide us with concrete photo evidence of this; many interesting facts can be registered.
