False tinder, Phellinus igniarius.
Phellinus, bracket or shelf fungi, are easily recognized – they are hoof-shaped, brown-coloured polypores, that grow on living as well as dead wood and can be seen all year round. The fruiting bodies of the Phellinus fungi are often hard as wood – fine door knobs can be made from them for instance, after the fruit bodies have been carefully dried.
19 Phellinus varieties are known from Estonia: they grow on birches, aspens, alders and willows. Two Phellinus species go on growing the whole year round, even during hard frost periods: the black willow bracket, Phellinus nigricans, and the grey Phellinus cinereus.
