Crested Tit.

  Crested Tit Parus cristatus

We will take a look at some birds who winter in Estonia but are only rarely seen at bird feeders.

The adults of crested tits can be recognized by their black-and-white head crest, which no other tit has. Crested tits are usually not seen outside forests, but they may be surprise visitors at bird feeders on occasions. But they can be looked for in pine woods. The fine thin chirruping that is sometimes heard in the forest may come from a crested tit. In summer and autumn the birds store up spiders and other delicacies in bark crevices and now go looking for them.

The crested tit is numerous as a nesting bird in our mainland, but quite rare on the islands. In winter they usually move in groups. In a few weeks the sun already stands higher in the sky, and pairing off begins, little by little.
