Pygmy Owl.

  Pygmy Owl Glaucidium passerinium

The only day-active owl is the smallest of our owl species – the pygmy owl. The others are true night-owls and they are heard rather than seen. And they are certainly calling now: February is here.
The pygmy owl is sometimes taken for an owl chick because of its small size: it is a starling-sized bird, dumpy like other owls, and may be seen on a winter day sitting on top of a pole or post.

The pygmy owl is sedentary in Estonia, it nests and also spends the winter here. Food is mainly small rodents. It is for them that the owl keeps watch from the pole, but it may also catch some smaller bird at a bird-feeder with not too much human activity around.
