Herald of Spring: Snowdrop

Snowdrop.

Here and there in a corner of the garden the snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) may already push their white heads through the snow. The oblong flowers are still closed but with a few warmer days they can open very fast. This little springtime herald has not need of much – as a bulbous plant it has collected the energy reserve necessary for flowering in a cold season already in last summer, and stored it in its underground bulb.

The snowdrop is not a native plant in Estonia. If it is found on a woodland fringe then it has arrived there from nearby gardens aided by humans. In its homeland in Southern Europe it flowers already in January-February, on our latitudes its flowering season is just about to begin.
