Bubble Patterns – Frozen "Bubbly Water"

Bubble pattern in ice.

This is a good time to go out on inland waters to study the ice. The sun has partly melted away the snow on the ice. There are sure to be gas bubble patterns that look like frozen water – the bubbles have been imprisoned in the ice. From where did they get there?

Waters begin to freeze from above in the winter, but after mid-winter old peoples’ tales say that a cold stone is thrown into the bottom: the freezing goes from the depths and upwards. Air bubbles in the water are now caught in a trap between two layers, and the result is nice bubble patterns.

Be careful when moving on ice, although there should as yet be no danger on smaller waters (places with springs must be avoided). The weekend will bring cold nights but the days will be more like early spring.

Rooks have always been signs of the arrival of early spring. Keep your eyes open!
