Spring Coming!

Cuckoo.

Here is a reminder to all that Estonia, as in previous years, takes part through EOÜ, Estonian Ornithological Society, in the BirdLife International internet-based and all-European registration of the arrival of four migrating bird species – white stork, cuckoo, barn swallow, and swift – in the portal "Kevad ärkab!" or "Spring alive!".

The first arrival date of these birds can be registered by Internet at the address http://www.springalive.net/, choosing the Estonian-language link.

Estonian observers were very active and successful in 2008, and were fifth in rank in Europe with their number of registrations. This year too I encourage all to register birds sightings there, and to see how spring moves along in Europe towards north. The same information would also be useful as input in our national portal “Tere, kevad!” (Hello, Spring!) and the other way about: observers there can post their contributions in the international network as well, and so find a larger public for the observations. This makes it more interesting for all.

With best wishes,
Andres Kalamees
EOÜ

P.S

And so a white stork has arrived in Estonia in spite of the snowstorm: today, 26.03 in the year 2009, a white stork arrived home from the south, to Sulev Lille in the village of Arumetsa near Häädemeeste, and at once started to repair its nest, Mati Kose tells.
