What Are The Islet Seals Waiting For?

So why are these seals still there on the islet? After shedding their baby coat they are quite ready for life in the sea and learning to catch fish. Pups born on ice would already have been swimming in the sea long ago by now. These “bush seals” obviously don’t know that their real habitat is just a little bit away and hunger is not yet serious enough to make them go out to look for fish. Their supply of fat still lasts.

The companionable nature of grey seals shows already at an early age. This, too, is why they wait here together. When one of them finally decides to become a "real" seal and move to the sea, the others will follow.

Until then, the log “climbing frame” is used for hanging around on, and for the necessary scratching and rubbing at moulting.
