Great grey shrike on an ash.

As a non-migrant bird, the great grey shrike is independent, it is very rare to see one near a bird feeder. The shrike likes to catch small rodents and birds, during summer different smaller animals, while using its very sharp beak. With a black streak surrounding his eyes, this bird might be more of an owl with how it lives. The shrike waits somewhere high that is visible, so it can find food, but it is a songbird. Most people have not heard it sing, though, because we don’t have a lot of great grey shrikes nesting in Estonia. During this time is when they usually move around. The great grey shrike can be noticed during the nesting period in fens. A careful person can even find the nest in a fen between some branches.
