The wagtail is here

A wagtail under a bridge. A meadow in Soomaa.

Latvia’s national bird can’t be heard very well during this explosive bird filled Spring. But it is here and has been seen tapping on the ice with its tail and on roofs, in both groups and alone. It can be said that the older generation viewed this bird as the icebreaker, because it arrives during late March or at the start of April, when the ice melts away. Tapping its tail against the ice was thought to be destroying of frozen water. The wagtail does it even today, so the old observations aren’t that wrong.
