Lynx. Elistvere animal park.
The mating season of lynxes (Lynx lynx) has ended. Although this cautious creature could be seen only a week ago rushing across a road, there is a calmer period now, and soon there will be cause to talk about young in the nest.
The activities of lynxes in Estonia are studied in Soomaa by telemetric monitoring – some of the animals carry a collar with a radio transmitter. This winter one such transmitter was put on a male lynx weighing more than 20 kilos. The monitoring has shown that in the mating season (or on exceptional occasions otherwise) a lynx moves in an area of up to 300 square kilometres – during this period the lynx goes on longer excursions, otherwise it keeps to about 140 square kilometres.
Good to know that the lynx is doing quite well in Estonia, and we will be waiting for the birth of the young.
