Waterfowl: goldeneye

Goldeneye courting display. Kuningaküla, Narva river.

During the migration periods of birds it is worthwhile to get near waters to observe the masses of birds that stop briefly here. Many of them cannot be seen later. The goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) is numerous as a transitory bird, but comparatively seldom nests in Estonia.

The white patch decorating the male goldeneye’s cheek, and their eye-catching black-and-white plumage are characteristic features. At a riverside even their courting display may be seen – wings beating and heads thrown back. The goldeneyes on the rivers will probably stay here to nest at the same forest lakes and rivers, but the birds seen in large masses at sea will migrate further.
