When you go birdwatching near waters, as for instance at Häädemeeste on the Riga Gulf in southwest Estonia, it is worth looking for the grey heron (Ardea cinerea). The heron nests in Estonia. Its flight is easy to recognise – it holds its neck curved a little backwards. Although it is a bird of waters it builds its nest high up in a tree – often a pine tree – and near other herons, forming colonies. It feeds on fish, but doesn’t compete with fishermen: the heron’s menu holds different fish species.
