Great grey owl on nest.

On April 28 ornithologists in eastern Virumaa discovered a great grey owl on its nest.
Very probably it is an incubating female bird. It was discovered in the course of field work for raptor monitoring, while checking previously known raptor nests on the basis of information from the Environment Office. It is a very remarkable find, since the last observation of a great grey owl nest in Estonia was more than a 100 years ago. Chance meetings with this large owl occur every year, but until now there have only been conjectures about nesting. In Estonia the great grey owl (or Lapland owl) belongs to the most strictly protected species, in Category I. It is not permitted to reveal the precise location where such a bird has been observed.

The great grey owl is an inhabitant of the taiga forests, with a distribution in Eurasia from Scandinavia to the Far East. To approach the nest of a Great grey owl may be dangerous: the large and aggressive bird frequently attacks intruders.

On the home page of the 2009 Bird of the Year, the tawny owl, there is  more information about the great grey owl:
Previous observations of the great grey owl in Estonia are reported on the EOY home page www.eoy.ee, by the Commission of rare bird sightings (www.eoy.ee/yhing/hk_e.htm).
