Flower buds of lilac opening.
Look closely at lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) now – in the bud their flowers just now look like small green cones, while in Central Europe lilac bushes are in full flower, and urge one to look for luck (remember, a lilac flower with five petals, or more, is lucky, just as a four-leaf clover leaf). But lilacs deserve being observed at any time and everywhere – especially if you know of some really old ones.
The veined and gnarled branches of an old bush remind more of tree trunks than of a bush. Because the branches of old lilacs tend to come near the ground, children love to climb on them. As a decorative bush it is grown in nearly every garden. Very old lilacs can most often be found in parks.
