Violets in the woods

Viola uliginosa.

In town pansies shine from pots and garden beds, and they have pretty relatives in woods and fields. Of the members of the Viola family, usually with violet or blue flowers, the humidity-loving Viola uliginosa and the dog-violet (Viola riviniana) catch the eye already in April. The Teesdale violet (Viola rupestris) with very pale flowers also flowers in spring, as does the wonder violet (Viola mirabilis). The wonder violet has its name from the fact that it has two kinds of flowers. Its flowers in spring are like any other flower, but in summer green, self-pollinating blooms that never open develop.

More than 15 Viola species are native in Estonia. Some of them flower beautifully in the woods all summer, as do the pansies in the garden beds
.
