The bird-cherry (Padus avium) has its party dress on in the whole of Estonia. It is useful to see how many weeks it flowers: people of old said that the number of weeks that the bird-cherry flowered, the same number of months autumn would last. From this you could also see if there was a need to hurry with tasks before the winter cold arrived.

The old people also knew that when the bird-cherry flowered then it was a good time to plant your potatoes, the danger of night frosts was past
