Straws in the lawn – red fescue

Tufted vetch and red fescue.

In many places the lawns have not been mowed yet, so in parks and on road verges it is still possible to study the plants that make up our green carpets - mainly the grasses, Graminae. In summer when the lawns are mowed frequently it is difficult to see exactly what is growing there. Now some of the grasses have already grown tall, such as the red fescue (Festuca rubra) that is one of the most common species in natural grass areas as well as lawn seed mixtures. You can recognise the red fescue by its reddish panicle. The lower sepals are often red too, and hairy.
Other grass species will be introduced later
.
