Water avens.
In meadows and on the outskirts of gardens a pretty bell-like flower is open now – the water avens (Geum rivale). A stalk covered with downy soft hairs, a nodding head, and small leaves add up to an impression of gentleness. At a cursory glance the water avens might be mistaken for a pasque-flower, but look closely at the leaves, they are completely different. When the plant’s flowering period ends in mid-summer, the stalks straighten up, because then it is time to spread the seeds and with a raised head it is easier.
