Herring gulls on roofs

Herring gull with chick.

Office people in greater cities, with company premises on the third floor or higher up, have surely noticed large downy young birds on roofs in spring. Usually they are the chicks of the herring gull (Larus argentatus). They scramble quite daringly on their own at the edge of the roof when the parents are away. City gulls have become ever more numerous during the last decades, as feeding sources – food waste – have increased near settlements.
