Here's a picture from our regular viewer in Poland, Lucyna.
I was convinced that the fifth chick would not hatch, but the world works in mysterious ways! Yesterday evening life was born underneath Padis. As many viewers thought earlier, the youngest chick would not have had hope for survival, even if Donna had shown him mercy. There is hardly enough food for three, and we'll see what remains for the smallest chick. It sometimes seems that Padis places the food in a spot advantageous to the small one, but not always. Sometimes we simply see what we want to see…
Donna solved the problem in the best possible fashion—she did not let the older chicks peck at and eat the youngest (the older chicks saw the wet young chick as food)—and so she swallowed it quickly while covering the other chicks. The feeding process was interrupted by this incident, and Donna had to feed them again an hour later. A bird's gizzard does not differentiate between chicks and polite objects fit for consumption, so Donna regurgitated the chick as food for the others. The piece was too big for the chicks and was returned to Donna's stomach. Hopefully, it will not resurface later as a recognizable object.
Three chicks grow quickly and there is peace in the nest. We hope no one comes from outside the nest to cause trouble!
