The cubs of the otter (Lutra lutra) are born in May-June and stay in the den for about six weeks. Only then they enter water for the first time, along with their mother. The banks of a trout river with clean water is a good place for otters, because there the food – fish – is also unpolluted. In addition to excessive hunting a great problem for otters is the pollution of streaming waters during the most intense agricultural cultivation period. At the moment the number of otters in Estonia is increasing.
