Fly orchid.
Looking at the earliest flowering orchid in the fen - the fly orchid with its insect-like flower - I have to smile. In my mind I see a high and straight pine trunk with beautiful sirens hanging on to it and singing, so luring male ramblers away from their path. Something like that happens to the distracted digger wasp, who sees the velvety and nicely scented flower of the fly orchid as an attractive wasp lady. By a clever trick the plant loads its victim with a pollen package which the victim then unwittingly passes to the next flower. Things are as simple as that. In reality the fly orchid is a rather difficult plant to see, because of its unassuming exterior. But once it has been saved on your „hard disk” it is much simpler. The flower itself is actually amazingly beautiful.
Early marsh orchid
In a good year the early marsh orchid can paint the fen area rose-coloured for some weeks. This glorious view doesn’t come about each year but this year there is some hope at least in Mahtra. The marsh-orchid varies in colour from white to dark violet. Some years ago I saw a large, purely white group in Törasoo.
Until June 14 orchid explorers have the chance to go looking for them in the Mahtra marshlands with the author. Just contact me!
In Mahtra LKA (Nature Protection Area) some twenty species of orchids grow
