The seed pods (follicles) of the marsh marigold.
Many plants have not even begun to flower, but the seeds of the marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) are already ripe. If the marsh marigold hurries, it may even manage to flower a second time at the end of summer.
Now however is the time to count, at the edge of a ditch or lake, how many "pods" in the marsh marigold’s seedhead of follicles have already burst open, and maybe even help it along a bit – by scattering the seeds into water, so that they can spread. The wind helps too.
