The migrating butterflies above are not seen in Estonia each summer. When they come, they do so in June - with the warm days the painted ladies will be here. The generation born here appears at the end of August. These long-distance migrators among the Vanessa butterflies - the painted lady and the admiral - are closely related species but not similar in appearance. In the years when the admiral occurs in great numbers it can be seen almost everywhere – on the seashore as well as in forest glades. The painted lady prefers open landscapes and is most numerous on the coast and the islands.
