Summer smells - meadowsweet

Photo: Arne Ader

Meadowsweet meadow.

The sweetly intoxicating scent of meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) floats from every ditch bank. Its inversely triangular flowerheads seem cloudlike, the airy impression is created by the innumerable tiny flowers, some open, some still in bud. The impression is softened even more by the long stamens of the flowers – they reach outwards like long eyelashes and invite, with a blink, one to admire them.
