The nesting territories of lesser spotted eagles will be protected.

Following the recommendation of the Eagle Club, in a first stage 15 lesser spotted eagle nesting territories will be protected by a decree from the ministry of the Environment: one in the county of Eastern Virumaa, two in Läänemaa, one in Western Virumaa, two in Põlvamaa, four in Raplamaa, one each in Tartumaa, Valgamaa and Viljandimaa respectively, and two in Võrumaa. Protection for more nesting territories is planned in a second stage.

The proposed protection directives set a ban on all felling of trees from March 15 to August 31. Hunting will be allowed only from September 1 to March 14, in order not to disturb nesting. There may be other problems, but the web camera showed that traffic noise from the road didn’t disturb the lesser spotted eagles.

Of the eagle species in Estonia lesser spotted eagles are seen most often; the number of nesting pairs is estimated at 500 – 600. The main threats to the species in Europe as well as in Estonia are the destruction of suitable nesting habitats, the loss or impaired quality of feeding areas, and disturbancies during the nesting period.
