Rushes never become such obstructions to rowing in lakes as reeds. The first-named belong to the sedges (Cyperaceae) and the latter to the grasses (Poaceae). The stems of rushes are cylindrical, pithy inside and have air-filled spaces between the cells: it is quite interesting to pick a stem apart. Their panicles flowered in June-July, and they may grow to a couple of meters in height in good growing conditions.
