Night in the forest saw air temperature of one degree and frost on the ground in low areas. The chicks grow noticeably, even at night.
Today after lunch, Eagle Club members Joosep, Kristo, and Urmas raised the web camera closer to the nest in order to see better detail (what the parents are feeding the chicks, for example). Unfortunately, in this process we had to chase Padis out of the nest. Joosep made some photographs, which we hope to show to you later.
Our estimate is that the chicks weigh a bit under a kilo and the weight difference between the smallest and largest chick is not significant. The camera picture, however, makes it appear there is a significant weight difference. We'll get exact data when we band the chicks (probably in the middle of June). Our activity did not create any problems in the nest. Donna didn't notice when she returned with food and discovered the Baltic herring left in the nest as a nice surprise. The chicks did not have to scrounge for food—the herring gift was a big hit. Padis relieved Donna in the nest at 6:30, looked around suspiciously, and then began guarding the chicks. Obviously, Donna will return in the morning.
