Few jellyfish

Moon jellyfish.

A dried moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) on the beach looks just like a stamp on the sand, with a pattern of red circles edged with a round border. This year walkers on the beaches have met few jellyfish, maybe due to the still warm water. One of the signs of summer’s end – moon jellyfish that have come in to shallow waters to reproduce, and end washed up on the sands - has been nearly all absent. There have only been a few scattered ones on the beach. If you draw a finger across the millimetre-thick membrane remaining on the sand of the dried jellyfish the red circles – the reproductive organs of the jellyfish – get smudged like lines in a drawing.
