Matsalu film festival starts

The festival week has started!
Hammering from the Lihula manor house granary shed told that stands for nature photos were being built. The walls of the ballroom in the main building are already decorated with the best photos from the Nature Year Photo 2009 competition. Photos are being hung in the manor entrance hall and other rooms too.
Two exhibitions have already been festively opened in Lihula culture centre: nature paintings by Hilda Klaar, well known by many as artist for several cinema films from Tallinnfilm, can be seen in the smaller hall of the Culture Centre, and in the foyer the dinosaur sculptures by students at the Haapsalu School for Handicapped Children draw exclamations from the audience.
There is an air of expectations and exhilaration in the festival grounds – two more days to the festive opening.

So on September 16.-20. you are invited to Läänemaa to enjoy nature films!

Great news at this year’s festival are a series of films from South Africa. Other faraway countries are represented by Australia, India, Japan, South Korea, Arabian Emirates, Argentine, Brazil, Ecuador, Iraq, Iran and Surinam. European nature films are represented by Germany, Austria, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Holland, Italy, Spain, Greece, Belgium and Portugal.

As usual the films compete in two categories: Nature, and Man and nature. The films shown in the grand hall have been translated into Estonian. There is also a wide choice of additional programmes in the Lihula Art Centre KuMa. In addition the video library will open again during the festival. There, all films sent to the festival can be seen on DVDs.

Traditionally we start the festival on Wednesday with a students’ day. The students’ own jury is based in Haapsalu already for the second year.

Also traditionally a part of our festival are the exhibitions of nature photos, where the largest is the Nature Photo 2009 show. And in Lihula Culture Centre landscape paintings by long-time artist for Tallinnfilm’s cinema films, Hilda Klaar, are shown during the festival.

There will be films to suit all interests this time too – for those who look for educational films about foreign countries, those who want scientific studies of processes or places, those look for presentations of various animals, or the problems of environmental protection. In all these areas we offer you films from different continents and countries!
Welcome to the festival!
