Will there be time this autumn to form the anthocyanins that colour leaves so beautifully red? Or will the yellow and orange carotenoids dominate in the tree crowns – colours that are there in the leaves in summer already, and that simply become visible when the chlorophyll decomposes? Just now there are rather dull brown leaves on some of the birches along the shore, the crowns are already sparse, and there is not even a hint of golden colours. The nights have been so warm this year. For a red-coloured autumn cold nights and sunny days are needed. But in some places maples with fire-red foliage catch the eye. Whether there is still time left for a glowing autumn to arrive we will soon see
