Redbacked shrike.
Birds go and time flies. In a few months the Tawny Owl Year will turn into a new bird’s year. Now is the time to make this new bird – or rather, birds – known. As next year’s bird – the 16th in order – the Estonian Ornithological Society have chosen our two shrikes: the redbacked shrike and the great grey shrike.
Both are quite common in Estonia, but far from widely known. Hopefully more will become known about them through the Bird or the Year project. And hopefully we, bird enthusiasts, will also get to know more, even when we already know and recognise the shrikes.
The Bird of the Year project group has three members: in addition to the author also Hannes Margusson (for homepage solutions) and Eet Tuule (studies of the redbacked shrike’s nesting). Help and advice will also be provided by Riho Kinks and Andres Kalamees from the Ornithological Society.
