Buckthorns grow on dry alvar-type land in northern and western Estonia; there we see them more often than elsewhere. Regardless of the “puu”, “tree”, in its Estonian name, the buckthorn grows as a dense bush. The typical upright thorns at the tops of the branches are easily seen. The fruits are black and poisonous and similar to those of the likewise poisonous alder buckthorn. Below is Arne’s photo of the berries of the alder buckthorn for comparison; the two bushes can often grow quite near each other.
