Birdwatchers at Ohessaare lake.

A brief report on the preliminary results from this weekend’s Birdwatch event.
By Sunday afternoon more than 60 bird observers had sent their observation results to the EOÜ (Estonian Ornithological Society). The very autumn-like weather on the weekend surely made an impact on the participation. During these two days nature friends counted 112 000 individual birds belonging to 147 species. The total number of birds is certain to be increased substantially by the migrants counted today in Sõrve, Spitham, and Kabli. At the moment the five most numerous species are:
Chaffinch (21 000 individuals), wigeon (17 700), barnacle goose (13 500), fieldfare (6 400) and herring gull (6 200). Among more exciting species there were the little grebe, common murre, peregrine falcon and European serin. Any real rarities didn’t appear at this year’s Birdwatch – the first longbilled dowitcher to be seen in Estonia, and observed on Friday, wasn’t seen by birdwatchers on the weekend.

Those who have not yet sent in their observations from the weekend should do so before the end of October at the latest, by e-mail: riho.kinks@eoy.ee  or ordinary mail to the EOÜ address.

Wishing all a continued bird-rich autumn!
