Spawning time: common whitefish

Black-headed gulls. Väike vain.

If the common whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) generally moves in deep waters, then for the spawning period – from Mid-October to December – it comes to the shore waters. Good spawning places are seabays protected from waves: in the shore waters of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, and likewise around Vormsi and Haapsalu. As the fertilized roe of the whitefish sinks to the bottom in shallow water, it hatches there until spring, when the fry come out in April. Although most fish species spawn in spring and summer, the sea trout and salmon, as the whitefish, start their spawning in October.
