Some of our jays are stationary birds and some go southwards. In autumn they move out from the woods to areas with more food. Together with the southern migrants, their number in winter is roughly three times that of those nesting here in summer, or up to a couple of hundred thousand.
The overall impression is greyish-pink, with black-white-blue on the wing – well-known colours but in the wrong order. A good recognition mark in flight is the white rump area.
