Thrushes on berry hunt

Blackbird with hawthorn berry.

In the last few weeks all aronias and the last redcurrants have disappeared from the bushes; in the early mornings flocks of thrushes can be seen flying around in the garden and at hedges, doing careful “inspections”. The berries of guelder roses and rowans are still there however, there is enough for all for the winter. Our winged friends wait for frosts to make the berrries nicely sweet.
Blackbirds (Turdus merula) are not migrating birds, but many of them still leave in November for more southerly areas. Those who intend to spend the winter here now eat, and get more and more round before winter arrives. It is a busy fattening up period
