Neckera pennata

Yesterday on a ramble in Poroni (older style name) primeval forest a moss listed in the red book, and worthy of attention, caught the eye – Neckera moss. There were still leaves on the trees and regardless of the weather, it was a beautiful sight. According to Henrik Relve’s principles a lime tree forest would be an area where one third of the trees are limes of natural origin, and such areas are really very rare. On tree trunks and fallen trees in Poruni 64 moss species have been found, and the most striking of them are the Neckera moss and the squirrel-tail moss that grow on old deciduous trees. The Neckera moss grows on the middle zone of the trunks and forms dark green, sometimes brownish colonies with prostrate stems and glossy stem tips. In dry weather the tips curve upwards, and the moss carpet then looks curly.
