On the north-western coast migrating flocks of bramblings can easily be seen now. It is rare as a nesting bird here in Estonia, and if it does nest then rather in a forest than near settled areas. In the beginning of the month chaffinches and the somewhat more colourful bramblings migrated in common flocks. The rump of a brambling is white and shows clearly in the grey of the days now. The head of the male is black and the breast orange, females have a yellowish breast and a patterned back. On Arne’s photo it is easy to determine the sex.
Wintering area is in Central Europe, and favourite places are beech forests, bird feeders are also gladly visited.
