A dead conifer suits the red banded polypore (red belt fungus; brown crumbly rot fungus) quite well as growing environment. It looks fine and decorative, but it causes brown rot in wood. What does wood damaged by brown rot look like? – the decaying wood has turned brown and splits easily into cube-shaped pieces. Does this seem familiar? The remainder, or humus, mostly consists of lignins, and is very enduring and can remain in the soil for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Because of this these residual products are important elements in the structure of soils, raising its aeration and water retention and favouring the growth of ectomycorrhizas.
Brown rot causing agents are few, one relative of the red banded polypore is the dry rot fungus in houses.
