The Australasian pipit (Anthus richardi) that was observed last Thursday in Tallinn (near Paljassaare bay) was in the same place even today. Even the slowest birdchasers have finally managed to see the bird :-). Yesterday Andrus Jair managed to get some better photos and they can be seen in the Estbirding gallery:

The Australasian pipit is a Siberian species that occurs in Europe mainly during autumn migration.

In Estonia it has been observed 16 times by now. Generally it is just glimpsed in overhead flight, when the characteristic call of the species is heard (it is from this that experienced observers find the bird). With luck one may catch the bird for a moment in binocular sight, and extremely rarely even photograph it here. Against this background the Paljassaare Australasian pipit is a really extraordinary case because the bird has been in the same place for a week already. Such a good chance to observe the species may come again here only after several years.
