Leaves are few, the forest is thinner, and in fine weather squirrels can be seen moving around when the morning frost lets go. The day is short and so evening activity is no longer noticed. By habit a daytime animal, squirrels seem to be active around eleven o’clock, but if the weather is bad they can stay in the nest for several days.

Ear tufts are long and the winter coat is on. In deciduous forests, cemeteries and parks the nest is mostly in a tree hollow, in conifer forests a twined structure near the trunk; squirrels also take over and rearrange bird’s nests for their own use. Last winter, after a storm, I found such a nest on the forest floor, and what revealed that it was a squirrel’s nest? It was very carefully lined with moss, birds don’t do this in winter, and of course there were hairs from the coat. Usually squirrels have several nests that they move between when the fleas become too aggressive.
A large part of the winter stores have been gathered but before the snow cover arrives there is always something in the trees and under trees to put in reserve. It is nothing mysterious either with squirrels nibbling on something in their paws when they have hidden eatables between tree roots – soil is rich in minerals and necessary for the organism
