Full moon time, and so the night is much lighter, cold and silent. After the mating period the female animals with their calves have gathered from bog areas to the higher forage fields. The rape has had frost and become sweeter. It can be an impressive sight – two elk cows, the older with two calves, the younger with one, in addition three heifers. The expressive and varied talking between them should have been recorded ...
Arne’s photo, from moose mating times, shows a characteristic of elk cows – the pale colour on the hind legs reaches up to the tail.
