Smews.

During the autumn migration we can see smews (Mergus albellus); a small number of them stay in Estonia for the winter. In the cold period they may be seen in larger water bodies, but you must be lucky to meet them in midwinter– there are few smews wintering here, most fly from their nesting areas in the northern taiga belt to warmer parts of Europe. The smew, related to the ducks, is slightly bigger than a jackdaw. The top of its head is reddish brown now; in flight the white belly and grey-black colours catch the eye.
