House sparrow.
The ever-shorter day forces birds to find as much food as possible in daylight hours, to be able to stand the cold nights. Putting out some seeds these days, or hanging a ball of fat outside the window is not much trouble – and to watch the birds is a pleasure. Especially when you know that the extra food really helps the birds; quite a few of them die in cold winters. But if you start, it is important that the feeding is kept up all the time, until spring.
