Fungi in snowy forest - tinder fungus

Photo: Arne Ader
Translation: Liis

Tinder fungus.

Even though the fruiting bodies of most fungi disappear when the cold comes, many are still visible; one of them is the tinder fungus or hoof fungus or touchwood (Fomes fomentarius), belonging to the polypores. In Arne’s photo the tinder fungus grows in its usual place, a fallen birch trunk. But somehow awry, because the pores of the fungus (the spores are released from them) should always face downwards towards the ground. The fruiting bodies of the tinder fungus last several years. The same fungus can be seen next year and the year after that.
